Weekly Gratitude - Chocolate coated raisins and those who love us

  • Thank you for licorice, chocolate coated raisins and M&M's with Peanut Butter... those are lifesavers when you're studying for eleven finals.
  • Thank you for summer coming closer and closer, with the sun shining brighter than ever.
  • Thank you for my finals having finally started - I don't like waiting, I like to get things over with.
  • Thank you to my furry friend, for reminding us all how important sleep is (though she's maybe taking that a little too seriously...  ;)
  • Thank you for those who love us.
  • Thank you to you, for making me smile the other day. It brought me to a whole new level of understanding.
  • Thank you to God, for he always gives you what you need. Just remember that what you need, is not always the same as what you want. "All in good time", said a wise man one day.

A short update...

Hi you all!

I just wanted to write a very quick post to tell you all that my blog might be a little low the next two or three weeks or so. I will of course keep posting, but it won't be as frequent I'm afraid.
Why? My finals started today... one down, ten to go! I have eleven finals this spring. But for what it's worth, I think my first one (I just came home :) went very well, so I'm happy about that!
Alright, that's it, I have to get back to my books... I have an exam tomorrow :)
But please keep commenting even though I won't post as much the next few weeks, I love reading your comments and they will perk me up when I'm studying, haha!

Weekly Gratitude - Easter eggs and memories of lost loved ones

This post is one day late, but better late than never, right?

  • Thank you for Easter eggs - they are especially yummy since they are only around for a short while each year!
  • Thank you to my mom for her amazing waffles, hers are the best!
  • Thank you to my friends, who came over the other night, and we had a great time.
  • Thank you for films like My Sister's Keeper which I watched yesterday. It is so beautiful and sad and moving. We need more films like that one.
  • Thank you for summer coming closer and closer, with all its goodness!
  • Thank you to God for bringing loved ones safely home.
  • And lastly, my deepest thank-you to a beloved friend who passed away yesterday, for all the beautiful moments we shared. You could always make me smile, and there was never a dull moment when you were around. We will never understand why you had to leave so soon and unexpectedly, but we are thankful for the memories that you left, to warm our saddened souls. I will always treasure the memory of you in my heart, and I know that we will meet again someday. I will never forget you.

Dior - Rouge Dior Lipstick in Mazette, 028

This lipstick is, quite frankly, perfection... so bright and perfect for summer!
It is a part of Christian Dior's Rouge Dior lipstick collection, which has 32 shades, each of which has a corresponding Dior Haute Couture gown. That is, each lipstick shade is inspired by a gown from Christian Dior. I think it is so fun and interesting to know that my lipstick has a corresponding gown... which I sadly haven't found yet - please let me know if you find a site where you can compare the dresses to the lipsticks, I'd love to see the gowns.

This is a more accurate picture of the colour - it is a bright coral colour, no shimmer of any kind. This lipstick is perfect for spring and summer, and I really like the formula, which is creamy, yet not too creamy.
The weartime is rather good, especially since the lipstick leaves a bit of a stain behind. I'd say about 4 hours, without eating.

The packaging is beautiful and classy, a dark-blue colour with a see-through at the top, where Dior's signature letters, CD, can be seen through (picture above).

And of course some swatches. The swatch to the left is very light, the lower one to the right is medium, and the top one to the right is full colour.

Value (10%) - 7.5/10
Would I repurchase? (15%) - 10/10

Benefit - Bella Bamba

Bella Bamba is Benefit's latest boxed powder (other well known ones are, among others, Hoola and Coralista). This one is a blush, a beautiful pink blush with shimmer, or as they say on the Benefit website, "a 3D brightening pink face powder".

The colour is not to bright, yet brightening, and the shimmer is not over the top. The powder comes with a brush, and although it is slightly better than the old brushes (Benefit has new packaging for their boxed powders now), then the brush is still not very good. It can be used, though.

Does this give me a 3D effect on my cheeks? Well... it definitely is dimensional. I'm not sure about the 3D, but the shimmer does give it a very pretty effect.

The packaging has 3D effect, and is very pretty (it's hard to catch the effect on camera, but above is my try :)

A closer look of the colour. Some have used this as a contour colour, even around their forehead... which I really do not recommend. It is a very pretty blush colour though, and I can see it working beautifully on both lighter and deeper skintones. However, I really don't like all the fallout that you get from this blush. I barely have to touch the blush with a brush (even a soft brush), and then tons and tons of powder fall off the brush. This is for me a major minus. Not only does it waste a lot of product, but it also makes everything very messy.

I had to post two swatch picture, because here you can see the shimmer to this colour, whereas on the next picture...

...you see a more accurate picture of the colour. I do really like this colour, and it wears very well.

Product (65%) - 8/10
Value (10%) - 8/10
Would I repurchase? (15%) - 7/10
Packaging (10%) - 9/10 (I like having a mirror, and the brush can be used in case of an emergency ;)

Benefit - Big Beautiful Eyes

Big Beautiful Eyes is a palette by Benefit Cosmetics, which contains the following products:
  • Boi-ing concealer in nr.2
  • A very light pink, shimmery eyeshadow
  • A shimmery, light brown eyeshadow
  • A matte, dark brown eyeshadow
  • A concealer brush
  • A double-ended brush with one end for shadow, the other for liner
Below you can see the three shadows. I use the lightest shade all over my lid, the middle one in my crease, and the darkest one I use wet as a liner, or dry as an extra emphasis for my crease. That way, you can take this palette from day to night, by adjusting the amount of liner and crease drama, so to speak.
Note, though, that even if you use the darkest colour wet, it won't be very dramatic as a liner.

The shadows are all very smooth and almost feel buttery - I haven't experienced any fallout with the shimmery shades, but just a tiny bit (next to none) from the matte one. The colours in the picture are very true to life.

Swatches, L-R: On top is Boi-ing concealer in nr.2. On the bottom are the shadows, lightest, middle, darkest. As you can see, the lightest colour is very light, and the middle colour has a bit of a pink undertone to it, which I don't really like. It is subtle, though.

You can also see that the concealer is way too dark for me, which means that it is as good as useless for me. I do sometimes use it as a base under the shadows, but since it is not meant to be an e/s primer, it doesn't prevent creasing.

The brushes are better quality than I had expected, but they are still not great.
  • The shadow brush ("contour") is very strangely cut, it is completely flat on top. I use it for placing the lightest colour on the lid, as well as sweeping the middle colour in my crease.
  • The eyeliner brush ("liner") feels cheap to me, and it isn't completely straight, which it is supposed to be. It can be used, though.
  • The concealer brush ("concealer") feels way to stiff... but then again, I am not a fan of these traditional concealer brushes. I don't use this one, since it is also too stiff for placing shadow on the lid.

So to sum things up, then this is a nice little palette with good-quality eyeshadows and usable brushes, if you like natural looks, and definitely good for travelling. However, if you are fair (like me) or dark, you won't be able to use the concealer, which is a big downside, since you will pay for more than you will use.

And does it make my eyes look bigger? Well, I think so, yes :)

Product (65%) - 8/10 (love the shadows, but I can't use the concealer)
Value (10%) - 8/10
Would I repurchase? (15%) - 8/10
Packaging (10%) - 9/10 (very cute, feels sturdy and it is made from paper, which makes it lighter and better for travelling)

Overall - 8/10

Benefit - Benetint

Benetint by Benefit Cosmetics is a cherry-tinted lip balm with SPF 15. It has a teeny tiny bit of sparkles, but nothing so obvious that you would actually notice once the balm is on.

Moisturizing? Well, yes, a bit I guess. However, if you are in need of something extremely moisturizing, then this is not what you are looking for.

This product is nice if you are one who generally doesn't wear lipstick or lip gloss, but likes to wear lip balm, since this will give you a slight tint of colour. For me (I am used to wearing lipstick every day) this is nice if I'm staying home and just want a little something, but I don't feel that it gives me enough colour to be worn on its own.

I'm not posting swatches for this product, since my camera (which I will have to upgrade some time...) didn't pick up on the slight colour. But it does give you a nice hint of a cherry colour.

Product (65%) - 6.5/10
Value (10%) - 6/10 (nice, but you can get a lip balm which does almost the same thing, for a lot less money)
Would I repurchase? (15%) - 4/10
Packaging (10%) - 8/10 (very cute and sturdy packaging)

Overall - 6/10

Guerlain - Météorites Compact in Teint Rosé, 01

Guerlain recently updated their Météorites Campact, and this is the glorious offspring. Before, this compact was, I believe, a bit more shimmery, and it had many colours in it, which then blended into one (the same idea as with the Météorites powder pearls ). Now, however, those colours have already been crushed up, blended and pressed, and the result is what you see below.

The pattern on the powder is so pretty :)
First off, let me tell you that this does not give you enough coverage to be considered a powder foundation. Instead, this mattifies your complexion while still giving it a bit of a satiny sheen or a subtle glow, and it is therefore ideal as a setting powder. I really love it, since it doesn't take the "life" out of my skin, as the case is with so many mattifying powders. This is also very useful for touch-ups during the day, when you can use the accompanying sponge for blotting your face.

This product smells strongly of perfume - which I don't mind since I can't smell it once it's on, but if you're sensitive about things like that, then you might not like this.

These powders come in 3 shades, mine is the lightest, and I love how light it is - sometimes it's hard to find a suitable powder, not to mention foundation, when you're pale. Note that on the Guerlain website, there seems to have been a mix-up with the swatches of those - the lightest shade is showing up as the darkest and vice versa.

The packaging is beautiful, as you can see above, but I was surprised to feel how little is weighs. That is of course nice if you don't want to weigh your purse down, but the downside is that it doesn't feel as luxurious, and almost feels plastic. The compact comes in a little pouch.

Product (65%) - 8/10
Value (10%) - 7/10
Would I repurchase? (15%) - 9/10
Packaging (10%) - 8/10

Overall - 8/10

Tom Ford - Private Blend Lip Colour in Pink Dusk

Tell me, how much can you love one lipstick? I mean, theoretically? Because I just don't know where this thing between me and my Tom Ford lippie is heading... all I know is that I'm in love... way over my head!

What is there not to love about this lipstick? The packaging is so elegant, and doesn't get fingerprints all over it; the lipstick itself isn't creamy to the point where it runs around your lips, yet it isn't drying at all; the lippie smells like candy (true!), the colour I bought is a perfect, perfect nude-ish pink with some barely-there shimmer; and you can use the top part of the lipstick packaging (which has "Tom Ford" engraved in it) as a mirror - and let me tell you, every day is a beautiful day when you have a golden mirror at hand!

Need I say more?

So elegant and classy - and the lipstick feels heavy in your hand, which gives it a bit more luxurious feel.

And there is that little golden plate with "Tom Ford" engraved in it - your lips can't look bad in a golden mirror!

The lipstick comes with the letters "TF" on the top. This picture (and the swatch picture below) is very true to real life - this is almost exactly its colour. The weartime is about 3-4 hours.

Product (65%) - 10/10
Value (10%) - 7/10 (this one is expensive, but you are really getting a lot for your money)
Would I repurchase? (15%) - 10/10
Packaging (10%) - 9.5/10

Overall - 9.5/10

Grasp the subject, the words will follow. - Cato the Elder, Roman orator and politician (234 BC - 149 BC)

Suitable for any princess...

You can't go wrong with cupcakes! Don't you just love that dish? I got two of those for my birthday last year (which reminds me, my birthday this year is approaching incredibly fast! Yay!) and they are the perfect size for cuppies - which makes me love them even more!

For the cupcakes and the icing, I used Magnolia's recipe (the same as for my Spring cupcakes, you can find the recipe by clicking that link), which has to be my favourite cupcake recipe. They are simple, delicious, everybody loves them, and they are so easy to decorate any way you want!

This time I decided to go for a princess theme, so I chose cupcake wrappers with pink crowns on them, coloured the icing pink, and sprinkled a few silver-y ornaments on top... and to take the theme all the way, we have that adorable pink dish :)

So what is better than eating a delicious cupcake? Well, eating a delicious and good-looking cupcake!

Berlin - A few pictures

I finally had the time to gather a few (believe me, those are "a few"... I think I have around 300 or 400 pictures from those 3 days!) pictures from my short visit to Berlin (I was there in the beginning of March). Enjoy, Berlin is such a wonderful city, so beautiful and so full of history!

The Brandenburg gate, one of Berlin's most famous places.

A closer look of the beautiful statue on top of the gate - would you believe me if I told you that some hundred years ago, this statue (which is not small, let me tell you) was stolen? And then retrieved? It amazes me how they did that without modern technology :)
We took a tour inside the national parliament, which is called "Bundestag". Inside, we saw this miniature version of the parliament. Isn't this building beautiful? This model was built by students in the university of arts, for blind people, so that they could feel what the building looks like.
Also inside the parliament is this wall - it is an old one, and withstood World War II (those walls they have there are incredibly thick and durable!). Russian soldiers wrote short sentences on this wall when they attacked the parliament during World War II, and after the war, when the Germans were rebuilding the parliament, this wall was covered. Now, however, it has been revealed again, and is left as a reminder of the past.
A closer look at one of the writings on the wall - you can clearly see the year "1945", as well as something else, written in Russian, if I'm not mistaken, probably by a Russian soldier.
This piece of art is in the parliament's basement, and each plate has the name of an important person in the history of German politics.
From the parliament's basement. This piece of a tunnel, is not just any piece of any tunnel :) It's a piece of the tunnel through which it is believed that the parliament was set on fire in 1933. That fire played an important role in the rising of Adolf Hitler and his movement. When I was there, I could almost see somebody sneaking in through the tunnel...
Inside the parliament. It's so gracious.
Also inside the parliament - you can see the eagle, and above, you can see the dome on top of the parliament.

Taken from inside the dome - isn't the German flag just beautiful?
Also taken from inside the dome, the Victory Column ("die Siegessäule" in German).

The front of the parliament, saying "Dem Deutschen Volke", which means "For the German nation".

The side of the parliament. This is such a beautiful building, I couldn't help taking so many pictures!

From the Holocaust Memorial (Holocaust Mahnmal) in Berlin. This is an abstract piece of art (a huge piece of art...), to honour the memory of all the Jews who lost their lives during Hitler's reign.

I thought it was beautiful how the clear sky separates the two blocks of concrete, almost like the sky stands for hope and a brighter future.

The "Park Inn" hotel at the Alexanderplatz, and the "Television Tower", or the "Fernsehturm" to the right.

The Television Tower again (sounds weird, I always think of it as the "Fernsehturm" :), with the burning sun behind it.

We went to the DDR Museum (and no, that's not me in the picture, it is a friend :), where you get a "hands-on" experience of history. You can, among other things, sit in a prison cell...

... look through books which were popular...

... or relax in a "typical" living room and watch TV recordings from those years. I highly recommend that you visit this museum, since it's different than any other museum I've been to.

This is taken outside the DDR Museum (this building is opposite the museum).

We also went to the Zoo, and saw the famous polar bear, Knut. He passed away a few days later, bless his memory.

Another museum we visited (you can never visit too many museums, people!) was the Checkpoint Charlie Museum, which is a huge museum, placed where the US Army Checkpoint was. This checkpoint (seen above) is outside the museum, and you can actually the man posing as a soldier there, to the right (holding a flag).

The best place to buy great-quality chocolate in Berlin, is at Fassbender & Rausch Chocolatier. They have amazing chocolate, but they also have amazing buildings, made from chocolate! Above is the Bundestag (the parliament), but they also have the Brandenburg Gate, The Television Tower and Titanic!

The front of the main building of the Humboldt University of Berlin - this is a highly respected and old university, and I believe its buildings are spread widely around the city. This particular building, however, is on the street "Unter den Linden".

A statue inside the Brandenburg Gate.

The Berlin Cathedral on a foggy day.

Those are some seriously beautiful balconies!

"The Missing House". The house that used to be there, exploded during the Second World War, and everybody inside died. The space has been left empty ever since as a memorial, and the victims' names have been written on plates on the walls. This memorial is something you don't easily forget once you've seen it.

The Olympic Stadium (Olympia Stadion), built in 1934-1936 for the Summer Olympics.

 Inside the Olympic Stadium.

We went to a great restaurant, called "12 Apostel", where they serve Italian food. I had to photograph the ceiling, it was just so pretty :) Random me...
A poster from the German History Museum. I didn't have time to go there now, but I really wanted to and I will one day ;) "Wir sind ein Volk" means "We are a nation", and this is a well-known sentence from German history, which was chanted by the protesting public in 1989 (I actually believe though, that the sentence was "Wir sind das Volk", which would mean "We are the nation").

And finally, this "hole" in the ground, which can be found near the Humboldt University of Berlin. Those empty bookshelves stand as a reminder of all the books which were burned during the reign of Adolf Hitler, for their content was not to his liking. Imagine all the literature, all the tales and all the words which were lost in the flames.

I hope that you enjoyed my pictures and my comments! Have you ever been to Berlin? If so, then how was your experience?

xox,
Miss Diorista
